Become a Scout!

Scouting is an adventurous fun, challenging and inclusive experience for young people aged 5 to 25.

Scouts WA is an inclusive organisation supporting the development of young people in our Western Australian community – creating moments that challenge, inspire, and connect our young people, sharing extraordinary adventures and unforgettable experiences. Our youth program is jam packed with opportunities to discover, grow, and achieve. Some Scouts choose to pursue achievement pathways by completing a series of challenges, other Scouts choose to simply enjoy the activities. Scouting is what you make of it.

Our program is broad and is underpinned by experiential learning. All Scouts have opportunities to try new things, stretch their comfort zones, develop skills through practising activities and to make mistakes. To achieve this, we have a framework that helps us plan out and reflect on activities. You can find out more about our program here.

Joey Scouts
(5-8yrs)
Discover Adventure

A Joey Scout is assisted

Joey Scouts partake in a variety of activities to build valuable skills like teamwork and resilience. From cooking and craft, to paddling, climbing and day-hiking in the great outdoors, messy play is never off the table!

Joey Scouts can earn the Joey Scout Challenge Award, which is the highest award (we call these ‘Peak Awards’) a Joey Scout can earn. Joey Scouts must complete several age-appropriate outdoor and personal development activities. This includes achieving the foundation stages of our Outdoor Adventure Skills, building skills in areas they are interested in (known as Special Interest Areas) as well as demonstrating teamwork and leadership behaviours.

Cub Scouts
(8-11yrs)
Create the Path

A Cub Scout is guided

Cub Scouts learn about the world we live in by doing regular activities within their Unit and Group. These might include learning to navigate, going on bike trips, camping, canoeing, rock climbing, and a host of other activities. They will even get invited to state-wide events, where Cub Scouts from across WA come together for a day of high-adrenaline fun.

Cub Scouts can, if they so choose, work towards the Grey Wolf Award by completing further challenges such as planning and leading a hike or day walk for a group of Cub Scouts. This is the highest award in the Cub Scout section.

Scouts
(11-14yrs)
Explore the Unknown

A Scout is encouraged

Scouts get to participate in a variety of physical and intellectual challenges – including interstate travel opportunities. The program allows young people to choose their activities as they follow their own interests.

While by no means compulsory, the Australian Scout Award can be earned by Scouts once they have consistently demonstrated their leadership abilities. Some of the challenges to overcome to achieve this award include completing a three-day hike and a variety of activities in three different special interest areas.

Venturer Scouts
(14-18yrs)
Look Wide

A Venturer Scout is mentored

Venturer Scouts are supported as they navigate the tough decisions that come with young adulthood. They get to go diving, snorkelling, and can even attend overseas Scouting events. Gaining a King’s Scout Award here can also contribute to WACE requirements and is highly regarded by universities and employers. Venturer Scouts can also earn nationally recognised vocational qualifications in business, leadership and outdoor recreation skills.

The Peak Award for this section is called the King’s Scout Award and can be achieved by completing such requirements as a four-day hike, and a variety of different activities. The activities are chosen by the Venturer Scout in consultation with their peers and leader.

Rover Scouts
(18-25yrs)
Beyond the Horizon

A Rover Scout is advised

Rover Scouts are entirely self-organising and plan and run all their activities according to the interests of the Unit. This means that activities can be unique to groups and include motorsports, sailing, and running events. While by no means a requirement, many Rover Scouts also choose to become leaders of younger Scouts and give back into the Movement that has shaped their lives.

Rover Scouts can choose to work towards the Baden Powell Scout Award. To achieve this award, Rover Scouts must complete a variety of challenges. Obtaining awards is not compulsory for obtaining the benefits of Scouting, but for those who push themselves further, there is a formal awards ceremony to honour them.

There are three main ways to join Scouts:

  1. Start the enquiry process because you’re not sure about which Group you want to check out, or you are simply starting
  2. Join a particular Group because you’ve connected with a Leader from the Group you want to join
  3. Volunteer with us

Make an Enquiry!

If you’re not sure which group is right for you, if you’re new to Scouting, or if you are simply wanting more information, we can help you once you have lodged an enquiry. All our leaders are volunteers, and as such it may take a few days for someone to get back to you. In the meantime, please don’t lodge a second enquiry! We promise our team is on it. However, if it’s been a couple of weeks and you feel your enquiry has been forgotten. please do reach out to us via email and one of our team can give you an update: enquiries@scoutswa.com.au.

Volunteer with Us!

Volunteering with us is super flexible. You can volunteer with a team of people in a variety of roles, capacities, and frequencies. Some people choose to volunteer as a Scout leader weekly, others choose to do so monthly, or choose a more administrative support role. We have opportunities to suit everyone. Simply choose Volunteer in the dropdown menu and register your interest.
