The Duke of Edinburgh Award

What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh Award (Duke of Ed) is an internationally recognised youth program that empowers young people aged 14 to 24, with minimum age limits for starting each level (there are three: bronze, silver, and gold). It encourages young people to participate in their community, get physically active, and gain a variety of skills that can’t be acquired in a classroom. Every participant sets their own rules, runs their own journey, and gains skills such as leadership, perseverance, creativity, and time management. Sound familiar? There are many similarities and parallels, between the different levels of The Duke of Ed and the Scout Association’s King’s Scout and Baden Powell Scout Awards.

Duke of Ed Section Requirements

The Duke of Ed has three levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level is divided into four sections: Service, Expeditions, Skills and Physical Recreation. In addition, there is a Residential Project required for the Gold level. Also, each level has an increased time participation, the shortest duration being Bronze, and the longest duration being Gold.

By registering for the Duke of Ed before commencing the Australian Scout Award, King’s Scout Award, or Baden-Powell Scout Award, Scouts, Venturer Scouts, and Rover Scouts can, with just a little more effort, earn both Awards. For example, a Scout can achieve the Bronze level Duke of Ed by doing the same activity for both the Duke of Ed and Australian Scout Award. Similarly, a Venturer Scout or Rover Scout pursuing the King’s Scout Award and Baden Powell Scout Award can overlap many of the same activities and so gain the Silver and Gold level Duke of Ed. The bottom line: Scouts WA members can achieve both awards with a little additional work.  Scouts Australia has put together a useful guide for Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts who wish to pursue a Duke of Ed Award.
