Uniforms
Uniforms are part of the symbolic framework, one of the elements in the Scout Method. The shirts are designed to be light and comfortable – and it is where badges display an individual’s identity, journey, and involvement in Scouting. In Australia, all Scout shirts are navy blue. The scarf is an iconic symbol of Scouting; it is the single most important identifier of a Scout around the world. You will get your very own scarf from you local Group. While uniforms change from country to country (some wear shorts, some wear pants, some have funny hats), every Scout all over the world does not deviate from the scarf element – although colours and designs of scarves of course vary. All Scout uniforms can be purchased online through the Scout Shop. You’ll get free standard delivery for orders over $10 and returns are easy if you get a size wrong.
The Shirt
For regular Scout nights, members wear their Scout shirt. This can either be a polo shirt (available to Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts) or a button-up shirt (available for Cub Scouts thorugh to Rover Scouts). The shirt has a coloured shoulder panel that represents each section (tan, yellow, green, maroon, and red).
Some groups also have an ‘activity shirt’ which is a polo with the group’s name on it. This can be worn on some Scout nights and at camps and on activity days.
On formal occasions, the Scout shirt is worn with black or navy pants (in Western Australia), and neat practical shoes.
The Scarf
Each Group in WA has its own distinctive scarf, and sometimes particular events will have their own scarf. Scarves are tied with a ‘woggle’.
Additional Uniform Components
There are many additional non-compulsory uniform components that can be purchased. Some are for special events, while others can be worn in addition to the standard uniform. These include hats, belts, and jackets.
The Scout Shop
The Scout Shop is a great resource for purchasing everything from quality camping gear to badges you can sew onto your camp blanket. It is also where you can get merchandise for various national events like Jamboree. Scouts’ uniforms can only be purchased online through the national Scout Shop, so please allow time for postage and delivery when placing your order. We don’t hold any Scout items for purchase at our head office.
Any additional optional activity shirts can be purchased through the Group.
